In particular, it was the subject of the newest xkcd comic: As soon as I saw this comic (which was posted just forty minutes ago Im currently in the middle of finishing an 8.022 p-set with some friends, one of whom is about as obsessed with xkcd as I am, so he showed it to me on his laptop), I immediately thought about admissionsin particular, the upcoming release of this years admissions decisions. Decisions are, basically, like The Game. You dont want to think about itbut you do. Im not sure if its possible to prevent that from happening, but even if its not, I do have two quick pieces of advice I would like to share before I get back to my p-set. First, as the title of this entry suggests really, it is all going to be okay. Whether the admissions decisions are released March 15, March 22, or any other date, you can rest assured that Ben, Matt, Nance, Stu, and all the other admissions officers are doing their best to select the most perfect class of MIT students they possibly can. Thats why they cant predict the date in advance. I know it may seem unfair to leave you hanging like that but in the long run, its really better for all the applicants. Second, remember that youre second-semester seniors. I know the month of March is an incredibly stressful time (I was in your shoes last year, after all ^_^), but at the same timethe biggest hurdle, the actual application process, is already over. Everything is downhill from here. Andwhen the decision date finally rolls around, just remember something Ben once said, I want to remind people that I didnt go to MIT, and I happen to like my life very much. MIT is an amazing place, but it wont determine your future success and happiness. How you embrace and dedicate yourself to whatever options life throws your way will. In the long run, life is what you make of it. Sometimes, what really matters isnt whether you win or lose the game its all about how you play it.

Macon’s hooded eyes roved over her with something like suppressed hunger. â€Å"How’s it going? You’re looking good.† â€Å"We feel good,† Gillian said, squeezing David’s arm. Macon’s eyes darkened. He looked at the intersection of Gillian’s hand and David’s arm as if it offended him. David looked back dispassionately, but a sort of wordless menace exuded from him. Macon actually took a step back. But all he said was, â€Å"Well, my parents are gone for the weekend, so make yourself at home. There should be food somewhere.† There was food everywhere. Grab a glass, it’s going fast.† When he’d said that he would round up a keg last week, Gillian had foolishly misheard it as â€Å"a cake.† Now she understood. It was a keg of beer and everybody was drinking. And not just beer. There were hard liquor bottles around. One guy was lying on a table with his mouth open while a girl poured something from a rectangular bottle into it. â€Å"Hey, Jill, this is for you.† Cory was trying to give her a plastic glass with foam overflowing the top. Gillian looked at him with open scorn. The rooms upstairs were just as beautiful as downstairs: palatial and almost awe inspiring. It put Gillian in a quiet mood. The music wasn’t as loud up here, and the cool marble gave her the feeling of being in a museum. She looked out a window to see velvet darkness punctuated by little twinkling lights. â€Å"You know, I’m glad you didn’t want to drink back there.† David’s voice behind her was quiet. She turned, trying to read his face. â€Å"But†¦ you were surprised?† â€Å"Well-it’s just sometimes now you seem so adult. Sort of worldly.† â€Å"Me? I mean-I mean you’re the one who seems like that.† And that’s what you like in girls, she thought. He looked away and laughed. â€Å"Oh, yeah. The tough guy. The wild guy. Tanya and I used to party pretty hard.† He shrugged. â€Å"I’m not tough. I’m just a small-town guy trying to get through life. I don’t look for trouble. I try to run from it if I can.† Gillian had to laugh herself at that. But there was something serious in David’s dark eyes. â€Å"I admit, it sort of had a way of finding me in the past,† he said slowly. â€Å"And I’ve done some things that I’m not proud of. But, you know †¦ I’d like to change that-if it’s possible.† â€Å"Sort of like a whole new side of you that wants to come out.† He looked startled. Then he glanced up and down her and grinned. â€Å"Yeah. Sort of like that.† Gillian felt suddenly inspired, hopeful. â€Å"I think,† she said slowly, trying to put her ideas together, â€Å"that sometimes people need to-to express both sides of themselves. And the truth is-† He looked around the darkened room. Gillian could only see his profile. He shook his head, then took a deep breath. â€Å"Okay, this is going to sound even dumber than I thought, but I’ve got to say it. The conflicts arise due to the ideological differences among the employees and the overlapping roles of the employees in certain departments. The spirit of teamwork that is necessary for the success of the organization is thus lacking in our organization. The coordination between the different departments is affected negatively by these poor relations. The other problem that affects the operations of the organization is poor relations between the management and the employees. It has been a tradition in the organization that a wide gap exists between the employees and the management of the organization. The decisions of the organization are often made by the management independently. Besides, there are no programs to evaluate the performance of each employee and give the necessary incentives to motivate the good performers. This contributes to the laxity and poor performance by the employees. The use of old systems of operations is yet another weakness in the organization that should be addressed. Various revolutionary changes are faced by organizations in the contemporary society including new technology, changing culture and the increasing demand for efficient services (Wamwangi, 2003, p.2). The organization has not been sensitive to the changes. Concerning the above-identified problems and others that may be encountered later, I suggest that the following initiatives be taken in the organization. Firstly, there is a need to change the organizational structure and the strategies (Cummings Worley, 2008, p.2). The employees should be included in all the decision-making processes in the organization. The employees should be made to understand that they are part of the organization and play key roles in the organization. There is need to have the representation of the views of the employees in developing all the operational strategies. This will also be a unifying factor among the employees. In resolving conflicts among the employees, there is need to institute a department that deals with employee counseling. This shall be responsible fo r cultivating the spirit of cohesion and teamwork among the employees. There is need to establish management training programs to help the employees develop various management skills. This will enable the employees to resolve minor disputes among them. The overlapping roles of the organizational departments or improper definition of the roles has been pointed out as the cause of conflicts among the employees. There is need to redefine the roles of the individual departments and ensure that all roles are exhausted. Employees are often motivated if their good service to the organization is recognized by the organization. On the other hand, the organization can suffer great losing by holding some employees that are underperforming. There is need to establish the performance standards for each employee roles. The performance of the employees should be used to set the increase in salaries and benefits. It should also be the criterion for the promotion of the employees to high positions in the organization. The successive poor performers should be relieved of the services to the organization. The organization has been seen to respond slowly to the changing trends in the demand of its services. Little innovative initiatives have been taken by the organization over the la st twenty years and the employees seem to be contented with the development pace. As a service industry, there is need to respond to the changing demands of our services. There is need to serve the needs of clients within the shortest periods so far. There is need to have data management systems that are effective and efficient in handling enormous data like information on the employees. There is need to improve on the communication systems used in the organization. In general, all the operations in the organizations need to be changed to meet the increasing demand of our clients. The adoption of modern technology in all operations like customer care services and communication within the organization will help improve on the services. It improves on the relation between the organization and its clients and the employees. If all these measures are taken, it is believed that the organization will regain its service delivery ability and realize an increase in its revenue.
